HUSTLE | 12 min | 2019
HUSTLE is a performance study interpreting the experience of being in rehearsal, specifically exposing the structure of how dance, a performance is made. This 12 min reflection uses metronome and voice reciting the counts “5,6,7,8” to represent the concept of practice makes perfect and the hustle. Also inserting the music track ‘Reachin’ 2 Much’ by Anderson .Paak, sections of song introduce the concept of burnout that accumulates over the course of rehearsing and when trying to accomplish a goal.
This work was flourished during a period where Christian was facing many projects that looked like to her a moment of constant opportunities but to others, she looked drained, stressed and exhausted. Kerry Washington once said, “...You just know, you have to be twice as good. In a way, until girls don’t have that feeling, we will not have done our jobs. That’s almost the point: to not feel the pressure to be extraordinary."This was during a reflection on her work with Shonda Rhimes’s Scandal. The mentality of people of color always has to work twice as hard to get by in projects and life over white people but at the same time, it gains so much humility and grounding when they realize how hard they work. This piece articulates these never-ending thoughts.
