SANDRA GEORGE COMMISSION
2024
In Spring 2024, I was commissioned to respond to the work of Prolific Photographer and Artist Sandra George. Sandra was a community worker in Craigmillar, Edinburgh. She was a prolific social-documentary photographer, taking thousands of images of community projects across Scotland from the late 1970s through into the late 2000s. Both social justice and equity were at the heart of her community and artistic work.
This print is a response to her and her legacy. Supported by Craigmillar Now and GSA Exhibitions.

In Addition to the print an event took place called “An Evening for Sandra George” celebrating the life and legacy of artist Sandra George, with a discussion between artist Christian Noelle Charles, and writers Zoe Lorimer and Titilayo Farukuoye. (Click on Image of talk to see the recording of the livestream).
This event creates space for meaningful conversation and connection, honouring Sandra’s contributions while highlighting the ongoing importance of amplifying Black voices in the arts. It offers an opportunity to gain insight into Sandra’s work and participatory practice and its profound impact on Scotland’s artistic landscape, and to explore the intersections of art and community engagement. This discussion will also engage in a reflective dialogue on the experiences of living as Black women in Scotland, and the pivotal role of community in navigating challenges and fostering resilience.
This event is part of Glasgow International’s Gatherings, and has been programmed by Christian Noelle Charles as part of her Sandra George Archive Commission for Glasgow International.
